Re "Activists want to ban Old Sac carriage horses" (Page A1, June 24): The brouhaha being stirred up by the out-of-town animal advocates is the stuff of a Saturday Night Live skit.
Here is a newsflash: these are working animals, and they are regulated by city ordinance. As the former operator of a horse boarding facility, I can say without question that horse owners are not going to chance endangering the health of their horses.
The Old Sacramento horses are, for some tourists, the only opportunity to see equines doing a job they did in great numbers throughout the West until the advent of the automobile. The lack of critical thinking the part of these advocates is astounding. Hauling a wagon weighing 800 pounds might be a problem for them, but surely they have heard of the term, strong as a horse.
