Re "Decision threatens initiative process" (Letters, June 27): Letter writer David Goble is concerned about the health of our initiative process, but he need not be.
Voters have used the initiative process successfully to cut or raise taxes, control spending, or impose term limits. It is an important tool designed to make politicians more responsive to voter needs or help voters get around politicians who are not responsive.
It was never designed to take away rights from any individual or group of citizens, as Proposition 8 was intended. In this instance, the initiative process was hijacked by people intending to impose their will or religious beliefs on others.
That was never what Thomas Jefferson intended for any of us when he wrote in the Declaration of Independence that we are all entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
