An old broken underground pipe between rice fields has caused a big hole to open up on rural Highway 113 in Sutter County.

The hole in the southbound lane of Highway 113 at Riggins Road north of Knights Landing, which opened up about 7 p.m. Wednesday, was causing about five-minute delays for motorists Thursday as traffic was held up to allow one-way passage past the sinkhole.

The sinkhole is about 6 feet wide and 8 feet deep.

The pipe broke, eroding the soil and causing the pavement to fail.

The pipe must be replaced, the hole filled and the pavement resurfaced.

The stretch of the roadway between Woodland and Yuba City will be down to one-way traffic for perhaps two days, according to Caltrans.

There is a possibility that Caltrans will set up a detour around the road repair.
