Get ready for some scorching heat.

Temperatures today are expected to top out at 107 degrees in downtown Sacramento. And the heat is here to stay with forecasters predicting triple-digit highs through Wednesday.

"It's not just triple digits. We'll be at 105 degrees or more each day," said Drew Peterson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

As of 9:30 a.m., the temperature was 87 degrees, 3 degrees warmer than Friday at the same point in time.

A "very potent high-pressure system in the desert Southwest" is causing the scorching heat, Peterson said. The heat blankets several states, including Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah. An excessive-heat warning is in place for the Sacramento region through July 3.
