Rancho Cordova turns 10 years old today
An old motel on Folsom Boulevard in Rancho Cordova will be demolished Tuesday morning a symbolic birthday present to a city that turns 10 years old today.
The motel is making way for a new campus of the Los Rios Community College District. Such redevelopment has been one of Rancho Cordova's priorities since it cleaved itself from unincorporated Sacramento County in 2003. Another focus has been on improving services.
The city will celebrate the anniversary of its incorporation this week with a variety of festivities, including a Civic Events Day today at City Hall. See www.RanchoCordova Anniversary.com for details.
Ten years ago, Rancho Cordova, with its thousands of acres of undeveloped land, was poised for explosive growth. The recession slammed on the brakes, but Mayor Linda Budge said building is now on the upswing.
She's proud of the city's performance in difficult years.
"To my knowledge, Rancho Cordova and Citrus Heights are the only two communities around (here) that have always had a balanced budget and a small reserve," she said.
