Two cooling centers in Elk Grove were opened Monday to provide relief for residents who may not have shelter or are living in homes without air-conditioning.
The Barbara Morse Wackford Community & Aquatic Complex, at 9014 Bruceville Road, will be open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Pets are not permitted.
The Laguna Town Hall, at 3020 Renwick Avenue, will also be open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. However, small pets are allowed at this center.
Both cooling centers will provide seating, water and an air-conditioned room where residents can take shelter from the heat. They will be operated by staff from the Cosumnes Community Services District.
So far, there are four cooling centers open in the Sacramento area, with Roseville extending hours at its downtown library to serve as a cooling center. Temperatures are expected to reach 108 degrees in the Sacramento area today.
