Given the amount of wine grapes that grow around the Sacramento region, it's no surprise that home winemaking thrives around these parts. And if you don't quite know the difference between your petite sirah and petit verdot, the Sacramento Home Winemakers club is here to help.

Mark your calendar for Aug. 3, in which the Sacramento Home Winemakers will again host its Winemaking 101 workshop. This class gives direction to newbie winemakers in terms of where to source grapes and secure the equipment needed for winemaking, plus other resources.

If you can't wait for Winemaking 101, the Sacramento Home Winemakers will meet at 7 p.m. July 17 – as the club does the third Wednesday of each month – at Turn Verein, 3349 J St., Sacramento.

June's meeting focused on the evaluation of Bordeaux varietals, and the July 17 gathering will feature a lecture by Rex Johnston, who was named winemaker of the year in the 2013 WineMaker International Amateur Wine Competition. Johnston will share his winning tips on fruit winemaking with the club.

On a related note, the Sacramento Home Winemakers were honored as club of the year at the 2013 WineMaker International Amateur Wine Competition.

Winemaking 101 runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 3. The class is free for Sacramento Home Winemakers members, and $20 for nonmembers.

Local food trucks will be parked for Grapes and Grub at this tasting facility for 10 local wineries, and the event includes live music and more.

The festivities run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information: (916) 744-1615, www.oldsugarmill.com.
