Re "19 'elite of the elite' mourned" (Page A1, July 2): Large out of control forest fires in remote locations can be controlled.
Why not learn from our defense program? High concussion bombs could blow out flames and deprive the fire of oxygen. I believe we could use them to extinguish remote forest fires like the one that killed 19 firefighters in Arizona.
During World War II, a bomb hit one of our warships, traveled through the ship to its engine room and extinguished the fire in the boiler. It works! It attacks the fire triangle -- oxygen, fuel, heat.
Concussion bombs could be ignited over the fire area, and followed up with traditional agents. The traditional methods of fighting these fires don't work. We need a new method that works.
