A $26,000 Chevrolet engine this week was donated for classroom use at Sacramento's Universal Technical Institute by the widow of Ron Whitman, a former field admissions technician at UTI.

Judy Whitman turned over the 454-cubic-inch, big block engine during ceremonies at the UTI campus on Duckhorn Drive, just west of Interstate 5, facing Sleep Train Arena to the east.

Ron Whitman assembled the engine and took it with him on student recruiting trips to high school classrooms throughout the area. Whitman died last year at the age of 56.

Judy Whitman said the best home for the engine is an automotive classroom. Tuesday's ceremonies also included presentation of a plaque in Ron Whitman's honor.
