Reading time, two minutes
If you're a young Kings veteran, shouldn't you be in Las Vegas this week for minicamp and summer league? There's a new owner, new general manager, new coach and new point guard (Greivis Vasquez). Because they're third-year players, incumbent point guard Isaiah Thomas and reserve Jimmer Fredette aren't required to attend, but wouldn't it be a great opportunity to make an impression on new coach Michael Malone? Not everything that happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas.
The first chance for Kings fans to see draft picks Ben McLemore and Ray McCallum in uniform will be Saturday at 3 p.m. against the Dallas Mavericks on NBA TV. McLemore and McCallum should play the bulk of the minutes in the backcourt during summer league. We expect McLemore to be the starting shooting guard next season, but McCallum likely will be behind Vasquez and Thomas at point guard. Developing a rapport with McLemore this month certainly won't hurt McCallum's opportunities for minutes when the season begins.
You have to hand it to Dave Weiglein a.k.a. Carmichael Dave who started his new gig at KHTK (1140 AM) on Monday. Cut loose by the station last year, apparently for being too critical of then-Kings owners Gavin and Joe Maloof, Weiglein drove an RV across the country to rally support for keeping the Kings in Sacramento and had a turn on the podium at City Hall for the celebratory news conference. He got his 15 minutes of national fame and the coveted morning show (5:30-9 a.m.) on the "Home to the Kings" alongside longtime Sacramento radio personality Keith Brooks. Love him or leave him, Weiglein is bringing local sports talk back to KHTK in the morning.
What to watch
Baseball, A's at Pittsburgh, 4:05 p.m., CSNCA: Dan Straily is on the mound for the A's as two of baseball's hottest teams go at it again.
What do you think of Carmichael Dave returning to KHTK in the morning?
It's great to hear local sports talk again.
I want local sports talk, but not Dave.
I listen to music in the morning.
