A planning and policy director has been picked to head the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District and the Sacramento Area Sewer District.

Prabhakar Somavarapu replaces Stan Dean as district engineer and will make $164,000 a year. Dean, who headed operations for the districts since 2010, retired recently.

The regional district provides sewer service to much of Sacramento County and West Sacramento. The district works with local sewer providers. The Sacramento Area Sewer District is a local sewer provider, as well.

The regional district has faced a number of challenges of late as it has been required by a state agency to enact stringent treatment requirements for sewage discharge. The district has raised rates, citing the requirements and other issues.

Somavarapu, who has been closely involved with these changes, was selected by the district's board of directors, which is made up of elected officials in the region. He has worked for the district since 1996.
