The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District and Sacramento Area Sewer District have tapped a longtime employee to run their agencies.
Prabhakar Somavarapu, who served most recently as planning and policy director, replaces Stan Dean as district engineer and will make $164,000 a year.
Dean recently retired after heading operations for the districts since 2010.
The regional district provides sewer service to much of Sacramento County and West Sacramento and works with local sewer providers.
The Sacramento Area Sewer District is a local sewer provider, as well.
The regional district has faced a number of challenges as it has been required by a state agency to enact stringent treatment requirements for sewage discharge.
The district has raised rates due to the requirements and other issues.
Somavarapu, who has been closely involved with these changes, has worked for the district since 1996.
