A 39-year-old Sacramento County jail inmate died Tuesday morning after she complained that she was ill due to swallowing drugs.
The inmate was in a holding tank in the female intake area about 2:20 a.m. when she told deputies that she was sick from ingesting a controlled substance, according to a Sheriff's Department news release.
The prisoner, booked Monday evening on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance for sale, was transported to a hospital, where she became unresponsive.
She was pronounced dead at 3:18 a.m. Her name was not released pending notification of relatives.
A Sacramento police activity log indicates that the woman was arrested after the search of a home in the 7600 block of Rotherton Way.
An officer was hailed down regarding the possibility that narcotics were in a nearby residence.
Officers conducted a search and found cocaine, methamphetamine packaged for sale and about $1,400.
The woman was then arrested.
