Sacramento Bee welcomes 2013 summer interns

The Sacramento Bee welcomes the 2013 summer interns. Here are the faces and bios behind the new names you're seeing in The Bee and at

Janelle Bitker
Janelle comes to us from UC Davis, where she headed up the student-run newspaper, The California Aggie, before graduating this spring. She has interests in food and wine, and interned in that topic at the San Francisco Chronicle. She has studied the interplay between technology and culture in modern society. She spent a year studying in Belgium and will be a reporting intern this summer.

Richard Chang
A graduate of UC Davis, Richard stayed on at The Sacramento Bee after his 2012 summer internship. He’s been covering general assignments on the Metro Desk. He is toying with graduate studies at Columbia University in New York.

Kurt Chibas
Kurt, a student at Stanford, graduated from Granite Bay High School. He has worked on the Stanford Daily and is studying economics and English. He spent this spring studying at Oxford and will be a reporting intern this summer.

Jeffery Dastin
Jeffrey is a student at Yale who grew up in West Hollywood. Jeffrey studies history and is fluent in Spanish and learning Chinese. He interned in the office of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

Kacey Gardner
Kacey hails from Redondo Beach but comes to us again this summer (she interned with The Bee last year) from Chico State. She headed up the award-winning Orion weekly newspaper on campus.

Amy Gebert
A student at University of Southern California, she is a reporting intern in our Capital Bureau. She studied art history abroad at the University College of London.

Loic Hostetter
For the first time (at least in a long, long time), the Opinion pages will have an intern for the entire summer. Loic comes from UCLA with a background in international development. He did an intensive course in Arabic in Marrakesh, Morocco, and has worked on the opinion pages of the Daily Bruin.

Ellen Le
Ellen is our summer fellow from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which means she is not a journalist, at least not yet. She grew up in Massachusetts, did her undergraduate work at Pomona College (in Claremont) and started post-grad in Iowa. But she’s starting that post-grad work over this fall at University of Texas.

Annalise Mantz
A student at USC, Annalise has worked at the Elk Grove Citizen and in Gov. Jerry Brown’s media office. This summer she will be a reporting intern in the Capital Bureau. She has spent a semester studying at City University, London.

Ben Mullin
A student at Chico State, Ben is from Upper Lake, Calif., (that’s north of Clear Lake). He worked on the CSUC paper, the Orion, and will be a reporting intern at The Bee.

Jack Newsham
A Yale student majoring in economics and global affairs, Jack is a reporting intern at The Bee. He has done online writing and editing and is fluent in French with a basic understanding of Hindi.

Brian Nguyen
A UC Davis student, Brian will be a photography intern this summer. He is studying international relations and has worked at The California Aggie and as a freelance photographer.

Kris Rivera
Kris made his first trip to California to be a Bee reporting intern this summer. From a small town in the greater El Paso, Texas, area, Kris is a student at University of Texas, El Paso, where he will be the sports editor. He interned in Washington, DC, for the Scripps Howard Foundation Wire.

Morgan Searles
Morgan studies at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La., where she grew up. She is a Scripps Howard intern in reporting, with experience heading up the Daily Reveille, the campus paper.

Anthony Siino
Anthony is a local guy – from Fair Oaks, interning on The Sacramento Bee copy desk this summer. He’s a student at Chico State and has worked for the Paradise newspaper. In Chico, he wrote the “Starving Student" dining-out column, for which he couldn’t spend more than $8 a meal.

Jacob Snider
Jacob is the intern working full time for the Advertising Division as a digital specialist. He graduated in May with a bachelor of science in business marketing from the University of Kansas. He previously was sales manager on the advertising staff of the University Daily Kansan. He enjoys sports and traveling of any sorts.

Brittany Torrez
Brittany is a Stanford student who comes from Elk Grove. She immersed herself in journalism activities at Stanford and developed an interest in coverage of mental health issues. She interned at the Elk Grove Citizen and copy edited a poetry publication. She will be a reporting intern this summer.
