Sacramento is one of the nation's best cities to live in if you're a chicken, according to the Seattle-based online real estate brokerage Redfin.

Redfin on Wednesday released a list of the nation's top five chicken-living urban locales. It was based on data that included the number of homes that have hit the market in the past three months with chicken enclosures mentioned as a feature in the multiple listing service description.

Sacramento came in at No. 4, joining California cities Ventura (No. 2) and San Diego (No. 3) on the list.

Portland, Ore., topped the list. Seattle was ranked No. 5.

Redfin noted the trend of more urban restaurants seeking and serving locally produced food. The study also said that some homebuyers are willing to pay a little more for a home with a henhouse.

Locally based Redfin real estate agent Lindsay Martin said "There are a lot of reasons people in Sacramento keep chickens. Some value the free, farm-fresh eggs; some see it as being good for the environment, and others simply enjoy having them as pets."
