A group of California pear farmers said today that it has become the first in-state commodity board to sponsor Sacramentos Americas Farm-to-Fork Capital program.
The Sacramento-based California Pear Advisory Board will join previously named businesses, grocers, restaurants and nonprofits as a participating sponsor of the program, which was formally launched in October by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson.
Farm-to-Fork touts the Sacramento regions food production, consumption and sustainability.
California pear farmers are the perfect partners for this program, because pears are strongly connected to the Sacramento area, said Chris Zanobini, president of the pear board. Not only have pears been produced in the Sacramento area since the Gold Rush days, but virtually all commercially-grown pears are produced within 100 miles of Sacramento.
The board says it represents all California pear farmers.
