Japanese Film Festival

What: The Sacramento Japanese Film Festival shows Japanese- language films that otherwise would not make it to a local big screen. The festival's ninth edition opens at 7:30 tonight with the family and road-trip movie "Haru's Journey." Other highlights include "Every Night Dreams," (12:45 p.m. Saturday), a silent 1933 film from director and social-drama specialist Mikio Naruse, and "Key of Life" (1:30 p.m. Sunday), a twist-filled tale of identity switches and unlikely romance.

Too $hort

What: Hip-hop may be a young person's game, but don't tell that to Todd Shaw, a.k.a. Too $hort, godfather of Bay Area rap. While some musicians go to great lengths to reinvent themselves, Short Dog hasn't been big on new tricks, focusing instead on what's kept him in the game for more than 30 years – straight-ahead rhymes about East Oakland street life set over dope-fiend beats.

When: 6:30 p.m.

Where: Ace of Spades, 1417 R St., Sacramento

Cost: $25

Bastille Day

Waiters Race

What: Speed-walking on Sacramento streets with a tray of wineglasses? Mais oui! For the fourth year, local waiters will test their balance and speed in the tradition of the French (said to have launched such a race to mark Bastille Day). Meanwhile, the curious can look on from the sidewalks of the Handle District as they sip their own glasses of wine or otherwise make merry.

Where: Race starts and finishes at 1801 L St., Sacramento

Cost: Free

Information: (916) 442-8575

Singing their stories

What: Mary Chapin Carpenter says she writes songs to make sense of things. Marc Cohn is a natural storyteller. They join their considerable talents for a performance as part of a summer tour. You'll want to plan ahead for this outing.
