Safety seat checkup
What: The California Highway Patrol will conduct a free child passenger safety seat checkup event. Certified child passenger safety technicians will be on hand to check car seats for proper installation, and to advise parents and caregivers how to choose appropriate car seats and properly install them in their vehicle. Drive-up visits are welcome. Parents or caregivers are encouraged to have their children present during the fitting and installation of the car seat or booster seat.

Blues on the green
What: The blues band Pinkie and the Blind Resistance will perform at the inaugural Family Blues Blowout at Southside Park. The family event will feature a free barbecue of hot dogs and hamburgers.
Where: 2115 Sixth St., Sacramento.
When: Noon to 5 p.m.
Cost: Free. Donations of canned and boxed food items are welcomed by the Sacramento Food Bank.

What: The fifth annual Davis Ranch Corn Festival will take place in Sloughhouse, featuring free samples of barbecue corn, free tractor rides, pony rides, food and live music.

Bastille Day event, race
What: The fourth annual Bastille Day event and waiters' race will take place in midtown Sacramento. The goal for waiters: carry a tray with a bottle of water and table glasses that will be three-quarters full of water and make it to the finish line without spilling the water or dropping the tray. An after-party will feature a DJ, French music, food vendors, beverages and children's entertainment.
Where: 1801 L St., Sacramento (L Street will be closed between 18th and 19th streets for the festival.)
When: 11:30 a.m.; waiters' race begins at noon.
Cost: Free admission (food and drink available for purchase)
