Kudos to: Greg Price, coordinator of National Association of Letter Carriers food drive

Accomplishment: Helped collect more than 520,000 pounds of food for Sacramento-area food banks

Details: Every May, the carriers conduct a food drive. Residents are asked to set a bag of non-perishable food products next to their mailboxes for their carrier to pick up on his or her normal mail delivery route. The carrier then delivers the collected food product to a central post office location to be sorted and loaded for distribution to food banks.

Kudos to: Allison Cook, graduate of Granite Bay High School

Accomplishment: Crowned Miss Oregon

Details: Cook, 19, a student at Oregon Institute of Technology, was crowned Miss Oregon. She will continue on to the Miss America competition in September. At the pageant she performed the Black Eyed Peas' "Let's Get It Started" on electro-acoustic fiddle. She fielded a question during the pageant on the constitutionality of the Patriot Act.

Kudos to: Saaket Agrawal, chemistry whiz

Accomplishment: Chosen to be one of four students representing the United States at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Moscow.

Details: The recent graduate of Mira Loma High School will compete against students from more than 70 countries. The U.S. team is sponsored by the American Chemical Society. It will take part in the 45th Olympiad today through July 24.
