Leading up to Tuesday night's All-Star Game, tremendously talented Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw suffered psychic damage. The source of his pain was Giants manager Bruce Bochy.

What sort of angst- inducing thoughtlessness could the mild-mannered Bochy have slung at the Dodgers' ace? Personal invective? Mean-spirited assessments of the left-hander's work? Did he call Kershaw's dog ugly?

Uh, no.

Bochy, manager of the National League All-Stars and therefore the man who decides the starting pitcher, fell afoul of Kershaw's emotions by saying, basically, that New York Mets right-hander Matt Harvey deserved to start, that it was nice Harvey could start in front of home fans at Citi Field, and that Harvey would have been Bochy's choice regardless of where the game was played.

That's gotta hurt. Clayton? "Yeah, it hurts."

A reporter for the Los Angeles Times wrote that Bochy "snubbed" Kershaw, standing up for the beleaguered pitcher while throwing objectivity to Kershaw's dog to chew upon.

Here's the question: Why would Bochy intentionally malign a guy who regularly throttles the Giants? Hurt feelings? How about a dugout full of orange-and-black-clad players all wearing oh-for-threes every time Kershaw gets finished with them?

Mighty tender for an ace, there, Mr. Kershaw.
