The identity of the person has not been released, pending notification of family or next of kin, according to Delray Shelton, Merced County Sheriff's Department spokesman.
Shelton said the department's dive team arrived at a section of canal near Badger Flat Road and Ingomar Grade at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
An autopsy was scheduled for late Thursday, Shelton said.
