Legislature sticks its nose where it doesn't belong again

Re "Florida boycott to be urged" (Capitol & California, July 18): Our highways are falling apart. College costs are out of control. Budgets are balanced using gimmicks. Looming unfunded public retirement and health care obligations threaten basic public services.

Yet, our legislators are wasting time preparing joint resolutions boycotting businesses and travel in Florida. Forget the fact that Florida's "stand your ground" law mimics self-defense laws in most other states. Forget that the local police and prosecutor determined there was insufficient evidence to prosecute. Disregard the jury's findings.

None of these facts matters. Instead businesses that do not enact law, had no hand in the case, and may philosophically support changes in Florida's law could be damaged because our legislators focus on issues that have no bearing on California's problems. No wonder the Legislature is held in such low regard.
