Bee staff writers and horse players Debbie Arrington and Steve Pajak are renewing their head-to-head bankroll battle during the State Fair. Each started with a hypothetical $500 for eight racing days.

ARRINGTON SAYS

• Today: Trainer Bill Morey – who wins with 38 percent of his maiden claimers – finds a relatively easy spot for 2-year-old The Tom Squad (sixth race) to debut. He offers some value in a wide-open race.

• The bet: $20 win/place The Tom Squad; $2 exacta box The Tom Squad, Come On Dude and Sailors Brother.

• Thursday: Won $89.80 when Don Perico-Devilgetbehindme finished 1-2 in the third race.

• Bankroll: $510.80

• Note to Steve: Halfway home and I'm in the black with beer money. How about you?

PAJAK SAYS

• Today: Expect Taste of Cash (ninth race) to improve off his career debut when he pressed a fast pace and faded late.

• The bet: $40 win Taste of Cash; $4 exacta boxes Taste of Cash with I'll Be Smart and Tribal Dancer.

• Thursday: Lost $54 when Celestial Council finished seventh in the ninth race.

• Bankroll: $320

• Note to Debbie: Bad idea to poke the bear.
