The energy at Raley Field on Thursday night seemed to hint at the support Sacramento will have for the USL Pro League. Fans liked the team name, colors and logo.
The team, which is scheduled to begin play next April, will be called Sacramento Republic FC. Its colors are red and brown, and the crest logo features a big red star and small brown bear.
"I think the logo looks terrific, and I think the name is fantastic," said Thomas Ketron, 47, of Sacramento. "It really ties into California and Sacramento. I think it's a strong representation of what I think will be a great football club."
His 13-year-old son, Gabriel Ketron, agreed.
"I think I might like this experience," he said. "The colors and everything (are) really good. I think this will do (well) in the long run."
Thea Aflague, 23, of Sacramento was content with the design and colors.
"I think the logo looks very American, compared to every other logo I've seen, with the big star, the California bear," Aflague said. "But it was cool. It's something that represented Sacramento, represented California, so it works. It's perfect."
Warren Smith, the president of Sacramento Pro Soccer, unveiled the USL Pro team name, logo and colors in front of an announced crowd of more than 14,000.
"There's one piece I wanted to show you now," Smith said as he revealed the logo. "It's the motto 'Urbs Indomita.' It means 'Indomitable City' because no matter what fire, flood or challenge faced the citizens of Sacramento, they chose to rise above, literally moving this river behind us to create a city and a place for all others to admire and inspire to be."
The coach for the Sacramento Republic FC will be Predrag Radosavlijevic. He played on the U.S. men's national team and scored the winning goal against Brazil in the 1998 Gold Cup. He's the only Major League Soccer player to have won the MVP award and scoring champion award twice.
Radosavlijevic was named the coach of Chivas USA in 2007 and honored as the Coach of the Year. Three years later, he was brought aboard as the coach of Toronto FC and led the team to the Canadian championship.
"I just want to ask you one question, Sacramento," Radosavlijevic said in front of a roaring crowd. "Do you want to go to MLS? The only way we're going to MLS is if we work together. And I promise you that we will put the best team on the field that you will be proud of. But we can't succeed without you. We need you to come and support the team. If you come and we put the numbers in the seats, I promise you we're going there."
