Bee staff writers and horse players Debbie Arrington and Steve Pajak are renewing their head-to-head bankroll battle during the State Fair. Each started with a hypothetical $500 for eight racing days.

ARRINGTON SAYS

• Today: Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer tries for a sweep of Cal Expo thoroughbred stakes with Going For A Spin (eighth race) in the $75,000 State Fair Filly & Mare Sprint. A multiple stakes winner, this talented mare comes back fresh, and she prefers dirt.

• The bet: $20 win/place Going For A Spin; $2 exacta box Going For A Spin, English Royal and Fightin Mean Mad.

• Friday: Lost $40 when The Tom Squad finished fourth in the sixth race.

• Bankroll: $470.80

• Note to Steve: Hollendorfer is a Hall of Famer for a reason, and this is as good as State Fair racing gets.

PAJAK SAYS

• Today: Donnas Fu (sixth race) drops to the bottom of the maiden claiming ranks after a decent career debut three weeks ago.

• The bet: $30 win Donnas Fu; $10 exacta box Donnas Fu and Yuma Landing.

• Friday: Taste of Cash (ninth race) scratched.

• Bankroll: $320

• Note to Debbie: Time to go to the whip.
