Elk Grove was one of eight cities in California to receive $185,000 in federal grants to preserve the past, the state Office of Historic Preservation announced this week.

Elk Grove will receive $24,000 to update its survey of Old Town, said Lucinda Woodward of the Office of Historic Preservation.

She said the city has struggled to distinguish what remains historic with all the development that's happened since Old Town was placed on the National Historic Register more than 20 years ago.

Old Town runs through the heart of the city along Elk Grove Boulevard.
