MERCED -- Cal Fire responded to a grass fire Thursday at 11:31 a.m. near Merced.
The blaze was reported on a property at 329 Tyler Road, according to Capt. Jeremy Rahn.
The fire burned a quarter acre of vegetation, and destroyed a 20-foot-by-20-foot barn, Rahn said.
Firefighters contained the blaze by 11:43 a.m.
Rahn said the cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.
A number of farm animals, such as sheep and cattle, were nearby but were unharmed. Firefighters kept the flames from spreading to other structures.
Because of a canal that runs in front of the property, firefighters had to run fire hoses from the street, Rahn said.
Ten firefighters, a battalion chief, three engines and a water tender responded to the scene.
Rahn said the monetary value of the damage has not been determined.
