A divisive choice as student member of UC Board of Regents

Re "Regents confirm Muslim member" (Capitol & California, July 18): It is troubling that the UC Board of Regents appointed as its 2014-15 student member a UC Berkeley student senator primarily known for her anti-Israel actions.

Sadia Saifuddin has promoted the divestment of university funds from companies that do business with Israel and demonized a UC Santa Cruz faculty member who stands up for Israel. Granted that she appears to be likable, tolerant and highly respected on her campus, according to news accounts. Saifuddin still has a bias that makes her an unfit representative for the 200,000-plus UC students. With a field of 30 student applicants for the post, surely the regents could have done better.
