Re "PETA has some explaining to do" (Letters, July 23): PETA is proud to be a shelter of last resort for animals with nowhere else to go. Virginia officials acknowledged this to USA Today, saying, "PETA will basically take anything that comes through the door, and other shelters won't do that."
Many "no-kill" facilities refuse to accept all but the most adoptable animals and send the aged, ill, injured, and aggressive ones to places like PETA that never turn any away.
PETA works to end the need for euthanasia at its source, by sterilizing nearly 94,000 animals at low cost to no cost since 2001; educating millions of people about the need to spay, neuter and adopt; and by helping needy families keep their animals by providing free food and veterinary care.
