Re "Don't link CHP salaries to pay of big city cops" (Editorials, July 24): The Bee editorial board's opinion of CHP officers seems to be very low. Upon completion of academy training, most CHP officers are forced to move, mostly to L.A. and the Bay Area, being uprooted from their homes. Then they work alongside what you term "big city cops."
You think CHP officers only write tickets on the freeway. Hardly. CHP officers make more felony arrests than most "big city" police forces and suffer more on-duty deaths. And who do you think is holding the line at every civil disturbance in the state? Yep, those ticket writers.
You include overtime in your assault of their wages, as if the officers have any control over long, unexpected hours. CHP officers have taken their fair hit on wages, and for this editorial to attack their compensation is not news, it's low-class journalism.
