San Jose mayor's pension push is backfiring for residents

Re "Ignoring 'rule,' Democrat picks pension fight" (Dan Morain, July 24): It's not courage that has led San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed to take on the retirement security of peace officers. It's cowardice.

Reed's war on those of us who put their lives on the line every day has led to the city to pay recruiters to go to Hawaii to try to attract new officers. The city has half the number of peace officers on the beat as do similar cities of its size. Retirements have spiked.

Meanwhile, an Enron billionaire from Texas, John Arnold, continues to bankroll Reed's attacks. Independent media reports discovered that Reed has inflated pension numbers while taxpayers are on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs to pay for lawsuits.

Reed hasn't been able to do what leaders in 400 jurisdictions in California have done -- solve their issues at the bargaining table.
