Newsom jumps on board with social magazine app Flipboard

Californians who want to get to know their elected officials on a more personal level can connect with Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom on the social magazine app Flipboard.

Flipboard allows users to compile articles, photos and videos into their own social magazine that other users can peruse.

Newsom created four virtual magazines on the app: "California," "Marriage Equality," "Immigration" and "Citizenville," that last one after his book of the same name.

Newsom, who was acting governor while Gov. Jerry Brown was out of the country last week, tweeted that he visited the Palo Alto office of the company Thursday and met with Flipboard CEO Mike McCue.

The former mayor of San Francisco has championed the tech industry and pushed for governments to update their use of technology to appeal to a digital-friendly audience. He pushed his social magazines in an email on Friday.

"There's so much happening in California right now – entrepreneurs and creative thinkers of every stripe are pushing the boundaries of what's possible," Newsom wrote in the email. "As a state, we are in the middle of important and exhilarating conversations about our future. I want your take on it all!"

California is a land of great cultural, demographic and economic extremes, and that extends to its 53 congressional districts, as a new Census Bureau interactive tool demonstrates. Data about every congressional district in the nation – although not political data – are available on the site,, making comparisons easy.
