The San Jose Sharks signed center Joe Pavelski to a $30 million, five-year contract extension Tuesday that will keep him off the free-agent market next summer.

Pavelski is the second key Sharks player signed to an extension this offseason. Center Logan Couture also signed a $30 million, five-year extension this month, a year before he could become a free agent. The deals keep both players under contract through the 2018-19 season.

"Joe has been an important part of our success over the last several years, and we are excited to have him with our club for the next six seasons," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said.

Pavelski, a seventh-round pick in 2003, tied for third on the team in points last season with 16 goals and 15 assists in 48 games. In 479 games with the Sharks, Pavelski, 29, has 150 goals and 186 assists, and he's ranked 10th in his draft class in points per game (0.70).
