West Sacramento-based California Safe Soil LLC and Grocery Outlet in Davis have entered into an agreement to make efficient use of the Davis store's recyclable organics.
CSS and operators of Grocery Outlet at 1800 E. Eighth St., said the agreement will displace nitrate fertilizers and help make operations of the store's farm suppliers more sustainable.
CSS technology recycles organics from local supermarkets. Organics are processed in only three hours in a manufacturing facility in West Sacramento.
The resulting liquid fertilizer - called Harvest-to-Harvest, or H2H - is pasteurized for food safety, stabilized for extended shelf life and emulsified for ease of application by farmers through existing farm equipment.
CSS says the process helps markets improve in-store hygiene, reduce costs and contribute to a greener environment.
CSS claims that H2H can reduce nitrate runoff into lakes and streams by as much as two-thirds.
