The apparent abduction of Super Porky, mascot of the Flying Pig BBQ restaurant, has Auburn-area residents on the lookout for a wooden pink pig with a blue cape.
Described as the size of small dog and weighing about 45 pounds, Super Porky required two chains to keep him aloft, suspended from the awning above the entrance to the restaurant at 760 Lincoln Way.
Manager Matt Van De Wal said the pig was there when he closed the restaurant about 9 p.m. Friday. When the restaurant reopened about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Super Porky was gone.
The pig was carved from redwood by owner George Miller's brother, a woodcarver with a shop in the town of Orick on Highway 101 on California's North Coast.
"We opened in January 2012, and he had been there the whole time," Van De Wal said of Super Porky. "Besides the casual person walking by who would take a picture, he had been left alone."
Van De Wal said it would have taken considerable effort to remove the pig, which hung 13 feet above the entry.
"I couldn't reach him from a 6-foot ladder," he said.
Van De Wal said the theft was reported to the Auburn Police Department, and restaurant staff members have been distributing fliers bearing Super Porky's photo and asking, "Have you seen me?"
He said the hope is that Super Porky will show up with a note saying, "Sorry."
If not, Van De Wal said, "we might have to take a trip up to the North Coast" to find a replacement.
