Re "Environment is going to pot" (Dan Morain, Aug. 4): Making marijuana illegal didn't reduce marijuana growing in the 1970s and it will not work now.
Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and Assemblyman Tom Ammiano are right. We must regulate and tax marijuana. With increased regulation, we can stop the degradation of our environment.
With baby boomers getting older and having more health issues, demand for marijuana will grow. Marijuana is a natural safe alternative to prescription medicines and has fewer side effects. We must establish rules on growing and selling marijuana, so that all parties win and our environment thrives. Making marijuana illegal failed. Let's try regulation and taxation.
