Re "The real story behind hunger strike" (Dan Morain, Aug. 11): Mr. Morain is usually a voice of reason among the cacophony of excess from both the political right and left. However in this column he drops to the level of fearmonger.
The Bee should be championing a statewide discussion of policies which have led our state to imprison more people than many western European countries and a parole system which due to a lack of funding defaults to recidivism.
Instead - at a time when the state is pressured to release prisoners due to overcrowding - it chooses to fan the flames of fear by focusing on a man who deserves to be where he is for many years.
In particular The Bee should report on the merits of a sentencing commission. Mr. Morain's piece does a great disservice to this discussion..
