Re "A blessing from the bishopL" (Page A1, Aug. 12): I applaud the courageous marchers who are advocating for a way to become lawful permanent residents and ultimately, U.S. citizens.
Because right now there is no way, no path at all. As an immigration attorney, I must clarify that the Dream Act and the 13- and 7-year paths referred to in the article are just proposals that have passed the Senate but have stalled in the House.
As of now, there is no path to citizenship or to a green card for the persons profiled in the article.
The most the young people can get is a 2-year work permit under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. This does not lead to Lawful Permanent Residency (a green card) or to citizenship. And there is nothing for the adults. We need new laws to make dreams come true for students and adults.
