Re "Gay weddings in church? Depends" (Page A1, Aug. 13): This otherwise excellent article failed to acknowledge the now 100 retired United Methodist clergy in Northern California and Nevada who have signed a covenant of their commitment to provide ministerial services to everybody, regardless of sexual orientation, including celebrating same-sex marriages.
At a press conference to announce the covenant, the Rev. Don Fado declared, "We will refuse to treat people as inferior, second-class citizens of God."
While the United Methodist Discipline forbids the celebration of same-sex marriages, the same paragraph "implores families and churches not to reject or condemn lesbian and gay members and friends. We commit ourselves to be in ministry for and with all persons."
The retired clergy who signed the covenant, including many in the Sacramento area, have chosen to honor the call to ministry with all persons.
