Re "No need for Bowen to take a bow on voting" (Editorials, Aug. 13): California Secretary of State Debra Bowen protected California voters.
Her security requirements, though burdensome to election officials, made California elections publicly verifiable. Would that more election officials were like her - concerned about the integrity of our elections, not just ease and efficiency!
Direct Record Electronic machines from the private companies that benefited from the federal Help America Vote Act were consistently found to be lethally vulnerable to error and tampering.
When voters began to worry about trade-secret vote-counting, Bowen bravely did what even well-meaning legislators who passed HAVA for wider voter enfranchisement did not realize was necessary: she insisted on a publicly verifiable vote-count by counting paper, not just digits.
In an era of draconian budget cuts, Bowen has been a great Secretary of State.
