Car show, sock hop
What: The Carmichael Elks Classic Car Show and Sock Hop will feature muscle cars, custom cruisers, low riders and other specialty cars from the 1960s and '70s. The sock hop will be in the Carmichael Elks Lodge No. 2103 air-conditioned ballroom. The event is a fundraiser for the lodge.

When: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cost: Free admission to car show; $15 for all-day wristband for sock hop.

What: A full day of doggie fun is scheduled at the fifth annual Pooch Plunge and Laps at the Lake in Cameron Park. The event begins with an adults fun run and dog walk, followed by the Pooch Plunge in Cameron Park Lake. Participants must provide written proof of current license and rabies vaccination for their dogs. There will also be vendor booths offering food, beverages, artisan creations, pet food products, toys and more.

When: 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cost: Entry fee for fun run is $20. Entry fee for Pooch Plunge is $10 for first dog and $7 for each additional dog.
WWII life revisited
What: Authors Tom Graves and Kiyo Sato will discuss their books at the California State Military Museum. Graves is the author of "Twice Heroes: America's Nisei Veterans of WWII and Korea." Sato penned "Kiyo's Story: A Japanese-American Family's Quest for the American Dream." Graves' book relays the experiences of Japanese American veterans. Sato's book recounts her family's harsh internment and years of racism.

When: Graves and Sato will sign their books at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
Mermaids and mermen
What: Old Sacramento's third annual Promenade of Mermaids will begin near the Delta King in Old Sacramento. "Mermaids" and "mermen" are invited to join the parade. Prizes will be awarded for best costume for adults and children. Grand marshals this year are the mermaids of one of the event sponsors, Dive Bar.
Where: 1000 Front St., Old Sacramento.
When: 1 p.m.
What: The Sacramento Zoo will host its 29th annual Ice Cream Safari fundraiser. There will be musical entertainment, face painting and all-you-can-eat ice cream and beverages.
Where: Land Park Drive and Sutterville Road, Sacramento.
When: 4 to 8 p.m.
Cost: General, $17; children younger than 12, $13. Parking is free and available throughout William Land Park.
