Tipped off after a traffic stop and arrest in Placer County, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department found a large cache of assault weapons, explosives and cash in a Rio Linda home where the arrested man lives.
The Placer County Sheriff's Office arrested Andreas H. Koertel, 46, after a traffic stop late Thursday night. Placer officials said he was taken to the Placer County Jail on multiple charges, including possession of illegal weapons and meth.
Placer deputies alerted the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department about the possibility of other items on the Rio Linda property, near 24th and E streets, where Koertel lives.
Upon arriving at the home and commencing a Friday night search, Sacramento detectives emerged with a collection that included four assault rifles, two with silencers; 20 high-capacity magazines, between 20,000 to 30,000 rounds of ammunition, various kinds of bombs, assorted passports and more than $30,000 in cash.
Sacramento County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Jason Ramos said one of the most disturbing finds at the home was a cell phone converted into a remote detonation device.
Investigators said they were let inside the dwelling by a person identified as the homeowner. They said multiple children under 10 years of age had access to the property.
Investigators are now trying to determine what plans Koertel or others might have had with the seized items.
