Re "Prescribing more doctor diversity" (Our Region, Aug. 11): Physician diversity is a key area of focus for California as the state implements the historic Affordable Care Act, which will expand health care coverage to millions of Californians.

The California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development offers scholarship and loan repayment programs designed to recruit and retain individuals in various health professions that are from diverse backgrounds and that want to serve medically underserved communities in California, to meet the need for health care throughout the state.

Through generous support from The California Endowment, the department has an additional $54 million available for students for scholarship assistance and loan repayment to pursue careers in the health care workforce in these underserved communities. We are currently accepting applications for these programs. Applications can be submitted electronically at http://www.oshpd.ca.gov/HPEF/Applications.html. --Robert P. David, Director, Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, Sacramento
