Local employers were looking to fill retail positions in July, posting online ads to cover the sales floor ahead of the back-to-school shopping season.
Help Wanted OnLine, the state Employment Development Department's monthly report on online job advertising released Friday, showed retail salespersons and first-line retail supervisors were among the top occupations for job ads in July.
Employers posted nearly 900 online ads for retail salespersons in July and another 600 more for retail supervisors, according to the report.
Both trailed registered nurses, the traditional leader in the category with 1,262 posts, but demand for the retail sales and supervisory positions moved ahead of ads for computer systems analyst No. 3 in June's report.
Applications developers (551), computer systems analysts (547), Web developers (456) and computer user support specialists (435) all were among the top 10 for online employment ads in July, according to the state's EDD.
The region's health networks continue to push the most ads online. Sutter Health, with 955 ads, and Dignity Health, with 574 posts, held the top two spots, while Kaiser Permanente's 324 ads were good for the No. 4 spot. Chip maker Intel placed third with 367 online postings.
The remaining employers were a mix of health, technology and staffing agencies, including Randstad, Robert Half International and Volt Information Sciences Inc.
Nonetheless, unemployment in the four-county Sacramento region rose by a half-percent in July to 8.9 percent compared with June's 8.4 percent, the EDD reported.
The jobless rate was highest in Sacramento County, at 9.2 percent. Yolo County's unemployment rate was 8.7 percent, while El Dorado County's was 8.4 percent. Placer County had the region's lowest jobless rate at 7.8 percent, according to the EDD.
