Why don't the A's have better attendance?

Leading Off: Once again, fans not supporting winning A's

The A's have been one of the best teams in the American League, and if the season ended today they'd be in the playoffs.

So where are all their fans?

Only 11,112 showed up at O.co Coliseum on Monday night to see Jarrod Parker's complete-game, 2-1 victory over the Mariners, the 24th time this season the A's have drawn fewer than 20,000 fans. And the average attendance of 22,990 entering Tuesday night's game is 25th in the major leagues.

Why aren't fans filling the park every night to watch one of baseball's most exciting young teams?

Is it because they have no real "stars," aside from perhaps veteran starter Bartolo Colon (on the disabled list), closer Grant Balfour and outfielder Yoenis Cespedes? They don't have big-name players; all they do is win, win, win.

Or is it because of the outdated, dilapidated Coliseum, which made headlines in June for a sewage spill that flooded both clubhouses?

Or is it because there are only so many baseball fans in Northern California, and the Giants own the market? The Giants, despite being all but eliminated from contention, continue to pack AT&T Park, with 41,585 attending Monday's 7-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

Entering Tuesday night's game, the Giants were third in the majors with an average attendance of 41,649. And they're first in capacity, filling 99.4 percent of AT&T's seats.

The A's and Giants are both home again today. If you go to the Bay Area, where would you rather go?

What to do

Baseball, Seattle at A's, O.co Coliseum, 12:35 p.m., MLB Network: There should be plenty of good seats – or stay home and watch on TV.
