The public is invited to a ceremony Sept. 6 to dedicate Gold Star Peak in honor of three Lake Tahoe-area soldiers who died in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The ceremony, scheduled for 11 a.m. at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe, will include the unveiling of a bronze memorial plaque. Lakeview Commons is near Lakeview Avenue and Highway 50.

The previously unnamed peak, visible across the lake on the north shore between Mount Watson and Martis Peak, has been named for the Gold Star lapel pin established in 1947 to identify the families of service members killed in combat.

The peak's dedication will honor Army Pfc. Phillip Brandon Williams, 21, killed Oct. 9, 2006, by a sniper in Iraq; Sgt. Timothy M. Smith, 25, who died April 7, 2008, after his vehicle was hit by an explosive device in Iraq; and Spc. Garrett Fant, 21, who died Sept. 26, 2011, after his unit was attacked with an explosive device in Afghanistan.

Speakers at the ceremony will include Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Elk Grove, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson and South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tom Davis.
