Re "Yet again, the right is on the wrong side of history" (Viewpoints, Aug. 22) William Endicott has shamelessly rewritten history, claiming that conservatives opposed freeing the slaves. The Republican Party was formed as the anti-slavery party. The Civil War was fought to end slavery, which Southern Democrats wanted to preserve. There were no Republicans under KKK hoods.
Republicans passed the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote, opposed by Democrats.
Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower had to call out the National Guard when a Democratic governor stood on schoolhouse steps to prevent black students from entering. A Southern Democrat filibustered the 1964 Civil Right Act.
Space precludes listing Democrats' civil rights violations even after the Civil War -- from separate drinking fountains, restrooms, to poll taxes and other impediments to voting such as requiring blacks to guess how many hairs were on a horse.
Oprah Winfrey recently compared the death of Trayvon Martin to the lynching death of Emmett Till. Ironically, Till was murdered by racist Southern Democrats.
