Salamanders Released

Julie Larsen Maher/ AP

Thirty-eight salamanders, which measure nearly 2 feet in length as adults, were released into the wild in western New York after being raised at the Bronx Zoo's Amphibian Propagation Center. They were hatched by the Buffalo Zoo in 2009, from eggs collected from the Allegheny River by the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Each hellbender was tagged with a microchip so their health can be tracked.
