Tesla Motors Inc., the Palo Alto-based producer of high-end electric cars, wants to open a repair and service center along Interstate 80 in Rocklin.

Under plans submitted to the city, Tesla would operate in more than 15,000 square feet of space at 4361 Granite Drive, near the Sierra College Boulevard exit off I-80.

The site was once a Kia dealership operated by the local Lasher Auto Group.

A spokesman for Tesla said, "we do not have a comment on this subject at this time."

The Rocklin building is already geared to automotive, meaning the service center could open within a few weeks, pending approvals.
