Yuba City's Collin Altamirano will play 22nd-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in the opening round of the U.S. Open, which starts Monday in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The date and time of the match have not been determined.
The 17-year-old Altamirano, who trains at Arden Hills, earned a wild card into the Grand Slam event by winning the USTA Boys 18 National Championships this month in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Kohlschreiber, 29, is ranked No. 25 in the world. He reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals last year.
Republic FC tryouts scheduled
Sacramento Republic FC, which begins United Soccer Leagues play in 2014, will hold tryouts for players 18 and older Oct. 5-6 and Oct. 19-20 at the Davis Legacy Soccer Complex, off Interstate 80 in Davis.
The registration fee for each two-day session is $200. Players are encouraged to register at SacRepublicFC.com.
UCD picked second in men's soccer
The UC Davis men's soccer team has been picked to finish second and Sacramento State fourth by coaches in the Big West Conference North Division.
UC Davis received 23 points (three of eight first-place votes) to place behind UC Santa Barbara with 25 points (five first-place votes). Cal Poly had 21 points and Sac State 11 in the four-team North Division.
Sac State senior forward Isaac Ikyurav from Benue, Nigeria, was named to the Big West preseason all-conference team. Former Jesuit forward Cameron Iwasu, a junior at UC Irvine, also made the 11-man team.
Sac St. at UCD in women's soccer
The Sac State women's soccer team will visit UC Davis today at 5 p.m. in the regular-season opener for both teams.
Senior midfielder Ashley Edwards, a preseason All-Big West pick, leads the Hornets. Sac State and UC Davis tied 0-0 last season.
